9 Must Have Scripts and Applications for a Better FriendFeed

by Samir Balwani on June 13, 2008

When I first signed up for FriendFeed, I was really turned off by all the clutter. Since then I’ve really cleaned it up, with use of a few Greasemonkey Scripts.

A lot of these scripts aren’t absolutely necessary, but I really think they make FriendFeed useable, especially if you’re following “noisy” people.

For a lot of the scripts you need to have installed GreaseMonkey. You can do that by first installing the FireFox browser, and then getting the GreaseMonkey add-on.

Scripts

Easy Unsubscribe
Clearing the noise on FriendFeed is really important. If someone isn’t adding to your time-line in a productive manner, it might mean that it’s time to drop them. The issue is that finding the unsubscribe button can be a pain, so this make’s it easy right from their user page.

FriendFeed Filters: Friends and Groups
I really like this script, it lets me group people together and then filter my time-line based on the group. If I only want to see updates from SEM people, I can create a group with people who are usually doing SEM, and only see their stuff all at once. The script also gives you the option of creating groups based on the service being shared too.

FriendFeed Groups

Show Domains
I don’t always trust what people are linking me, this script makes it easy to see what you’re clicking on.

FriendFeed Stats
This script is really a just for fun script. It lets you see your activity on FriendFeed. Not much utility there, but it does help you know if you’re using it enough.

Read Later Tag
I’m a huge fan of this script, it allows the use of a “Read Later” tab, and populates it with entries you’ve tagged as “Read Later”. I highly recommend this, for when you’re scanning through your time-line and see some stuff of interest but don’t have time to read now.

Re-Share Link
This script makes it easy to submit a link to a number of social media sites, like Digg, reddit, and Sphinn. It’s a great plugin for all the Social Media addicts we have, and it will definitely make your life easier.

Customize Tabs
Customized Tabs let’s you open up other sites in Tabs right on FriendFeed. With this script you never have to leave FriendFeed.

Applications

Alert Thingy
Alert Thingy is a desktop application that will show your FriendFeed time-line. This lets you interact with FriendFeed without having to go to the website. Alert Thingy also integrates with Twitter and Flickr.

Twhirl
Twhirl is another desktop application, that shows your FriendFeed time-line. I’m not a big fan of Twhirl, I suggest using Alert Thingy instead. Twhirl also integrates with Twitter.
