Copyright Over-Protection…

by Samir Balwani on April 10, 2008

As I write my paper on Copyright and the future. I’ve come across an exceptional professor named Lawrence Lessig. He is an amazing lecturer and introduced a term “Free Culture”. I respect his intelligence and he clearly lays out a great argument for the importance of copyright change. However, I do disagree with his enthusiasm for Creative Commons, I agree it is a good start but I don’t believe it does enough. It could just be me, being more liberal than he is.

This whole post leads up to a single question. While I was listening to his final lecture (which I added to the bottom of this post) Lessig speaks about a young lady who taped her son dancing to a song and then posted the video on Youtube. Universal then sued Youtube because they owned the copyright to which the son was dancing to. This made me think, and lead me to the question, a question I hope someone can answer. If I bought a CD, and listen to it loudly outside, and you hear it… am I illegally sharing music?
