Guest Blogging Etiquette

Recently, I’ve begun contacting bloggers in the hopes of being able to write a post on their blog. It’s called guest blogging, and I really like doing it.

The idea of writing for an entirely new audience, on a well developed blog challenges me to write a great post. It cultivates my reputation, helps me gain better feedback, and builds traffic back to my blog.

I’m not the only one that wins. The blogger gets a free post, and one with a new style and different viewpoint.

Finding Guest Post Possibilities

The best way to find guest blogging opportunities is to make friends with bloggers. Thankfully, Social Media has made it easier to and meet with your peers.

For example, it was because of Plurk that I met and became friends with David Harry and Tamar, which in turn lead to two guest posts.

Another way to contact bloggers is simply emailing them. You can’t be shy if you want to be successful. Just remember that he blogger is just another person like you or me.

When you email the blogger be sure to let them know what you’ll write about, and ask if the blogger would rather a specific topic.

Do Your Homework

It’s important to make sure you do your homework before you contact the blogger.

• Check compete.com to get a basic idea of how many visitors the blog gets monthly, to make sure it’s worth your time.
• Read as much of the blog as you can to get a feel for the topic, style, and length of posts.
• Look at some of the comments and see what the blog readers expect.
• Prepare a few headlines or topics you want to cover. Then ask the blogger which they like
• Have a pre-written resource box. Some bloggers like to have a small intro for guest posts

The single best piece of advice that I can give, is to be friendly. Make friends, and be nice, and guest blogging opportunities will automatically follow.
