Know Your Traffic!

by Samir Balwani on May 7, 2008

You have traffic coming to your blog, your writing great content, and your SEO is great, but the bank still has a giant $0. So what’s wrong?

Assuming you put some kind of advertising up, you should be able to convert some of that traffic into money, but obviously it’s not working. This issue highlights one of the biggest problems with bloggers today. You need to know your traffic, what they want, what they’re interested in, and how you can offer ads that will interest them.

Whenever you place an ad or affiliate marker, ask yourself the questions, “Would I click this? Am I interested in this? Does this fit?”.

Not sure what kind of ads to place, or even where to place them. Check out blogs that are similar to yours in the same niche. The easy way to find other sites is by referring to your analytics program for the search keywords used to find your blog, and look at the other sites that come up for those terms.

Experiment and give it time to work. You can try new ads and perform A + B testing for free, offered by Google through their Website Optimizer program.

Stay tuned for an upcoming series on Making Money Online where I explore different Ad Networks and analyze the difference between profitability of Pay Per Click and Pay Per Action Ads.
