Review: Using DataFeedr to Build Affiliate Stores

by Samir Balwani on August 20, 2008

I get a lot of requests for tutorials on how to setup and build affiliate shops and stores. I’ve decided to share what I use when putting together affiliate sites, Datafeedr.

What is DataFeedr?

DataFeedr is a service that helps you build many a lot of affiliate stores, really fast. It’s made up of an online service and a WordPress plugin.

You use it by first installing the plugin to your Wordpress blog. It creates a page which holds the affiliate store.

Once you’ve done that, you sign into your Datafeedr account on their site and create a feed. Here you’ll be able to add products, merchants, or series of products. The service will create categories, and search functions. Download the feed, and upload it to your Wordpress blog via the Datafeedr plugin.

From the plugin page on your blog, you can edit the categories, create meta tags, and write page descriptions.

If you don’t want all the products to show up at once, but instead want the store to grow over time, you can use the plugin’s drip function. This let’s it post a new product every 4 to 8 hours. With the drip function, your blog looks like it’s being updated, but in truth you’re adding products to your store.

The service has multiple cost tiers, with 1 affiliate shop costing $27 a month, up to unlimited stores at $97 a month. Want to learn more? You can watch videos on how to use the product, and see what other features it has at Datafeedr.com.

Why It’s Good:

Datafeedr gives you the power to build niche shops quickly. In the time it would usually take you to create one store, with this service, you can put up hundreds.

Find a niche, add products, upload to your blog, and you’re done.

It’s easy because it creates categories for you, and the full feature set means less coding. You can spend more time figuring out which niches you want to enter, instead of wasting it creating the store.

Not only is it easy, but Datafeedr has four major strengths:

  • Firstly, everything is search engine friendly. From the URLs to category descriptions. Mixed with the “All-In-One-SEO” plugin, you can finish optimizing an Affiliate Store in minutes.
  • Secondly, since each product is it’s own page, your affiliate store starts to rank for hundreds of long tail searches. Not only does Datafeedr add the product to it’s own page, but also pulls a description so the page isn’t empty.
  • Third, the drip function helps keep your store fresh. As products are posted, Wordpress pings out to sites, and Google comes to take a look. The constant updates can really help when it comes to search engine rankings.
  • Fourth, the creators of the plugin are very accessible. If you have any questions, you can email them or contact them through the forums. They’re quick to respond and take advice very well. I’ve seen people ask for a feature to be included in the next build, and then watched as it was released within a few weeks.

It’s Shortcomings

DataFeedr does have a shortcoming, it’s expensive.

However, if you do the keyword research needed to create a good affiliate site, the store can offset the price of the service.

It takes some time to create a successful shop, so expect to pay a bit before making a profit.

Overall Datafeedr is a great affiliate tool, especially if you’re putting together multiple affiliate stores.

The search traffic, and the ability to create many stores quickly, makes this service worth it. It’s definitely worth the $27 a month to try out.
