SEO’s Need to Grow Up

This post has two meanings. The first, SEO’s need to stop complaining about who said what about SEO’s. The start of this conversation was interesting, when Calacanis said that SEO is on it’s way out. It’s a true statement, IF you explain it. Although, poorly stated, Jason actually meant that SEO in its current form is on it’s way out. Leading to the second point of this post - SEO’s need to adapt and evolve with the growth of the Internet.

The old school idea of SEO, paid links, directory submissions, link farms, etc. etc. isn’t nearly as important as it used to be. We’ve watched as SEO has matured - spending hours manually submitting to directories, and looking for sites in your niche with high pr to buy links from, has become spending hours becoming a part of social media sites and leveraging that power as well as understanding and truly mastering the idea of link bait.

In the end, SEO is not dead as an industry, but it has changed. Other than the basic understanding of link-structure, optimizing the meta description, and other miscellaneous small changes you can learn easily, (want to learn it? sign up for my FREE SEO Course) SEO has become mainly content writing. Write good link bait and you get all the link you used to from paid links and directories - leverage social media with good content and you receive a spike in traffic, but more importantly, the backlinks that come along with viral content. Until Google, Yahoo, MSN, become a perfect system SEO will not die.
