With the presidential election getting, the Internet is ablaze with political articles and videos. One meme that is really taking the world by storm is the “5 friends” YouTube video. If you haven’t seen it, you can see it here…
Social media has proven it’s extremely powerful and that it can change people’s minds’. Both, Senator Obama and Senator McCain have embraced the Internet and are using it to their advantage.
Senator McCain has his own website, blog, and social network. His facebook account has 559,338 friends, surprisingly he doesn’t have an active twitter account.
Senator Obama is also using the Internet to it’s fullest. He has a website, a blog, and his own social network too. Obama has 2,014,385 facebook friends, and 92,777 twitter followers. One of the most ingenious things the campaign has done is release an Obama iPhone Application.
We know that during the presidential campaign social media is used profusely, by why not everyday?
Why don’t we see political action groups creating online meme’s against the $700 billion bailout to swat public sentiment? Why isn’t there a democrat or republican social network, run by the DNC or RNC?
Social media has the ability to bring us closer to a true democracy where we can vote in real time. We can let our representatives know what we think in a moment’s notice.
So what’s stopping us from using the Internet to help each of us have a greater say in our government?
I’m really asking you, what do you think? Along with the YouTube video, pass this on to your friends so we can all ask the question; With all the new technology, why don’t we have more say in our government?
