When I’m writing a post I like to link out to other blogs to show my readers that I’m not the only person thinking a certain way. Linking out to other blogs, especially those that allow track-backs, can also be a great way to build the initial traffic back to a new article.
The problem is a lot of times I can’t find articles to link back to. To help alleviate this issue, I found a way to use Google Custom Search Engine’s to search blogs that I like to link to. In a nutshell I’ve added authority sites to a custom search engine, and search these sites to find articles that I can link to.
Step by Step Guide
First, you need to make a list of blogs you want to include in your search engine, either favorite them or just write it out. The size of your list will depend on how strict you want your searches to be.
Once you have a list of blogs to include, head over to Google Custom Search Engines, and log into your Google account. When you’ve done that you should come across a screen that looks like this:
Click on “Create a Custom Search Engine” and you’ll come to a form that you have to fill out before Google creates the Search Engine for you. The information you’re filling out right now is for your Search Engine, and will be shared online, so don’t put anything private here.
When asked the question “What do you want to search?”, make sure you select the option “Only sites I select”.
and then fill in the sites from the list you created.
Finally, you’ll be asked to decide what edition you want, obviously, we’re going to go with the free one. Select “Standard Edition” and unless you’re a non-profit or university, leave the box unchecked.
Now you have a Search Engine, powered by Google, that lets you search the authority sites you frequent. Use this to find all the links you need for your articles.
Do you use this technique or have another tip I should include, leave a comment or shoot me an email.
